Who’s number one?

by Jonky

Having gotten around as much as I do, it’s many times I’m asked where’s the best restaurant in town. I always love the question as it gets me thinking of all the great spots I’ve been and also reminds me of the duds too. I think the question really boils down to is where is that one “must-go” place.

There’s honestly many number one spots in town who all have that special something, we don’t have a renowned In-n-out burger or a Ruth’s steak house, but rather a town full of secret home recipes and passionate cooks. There’s one lady in town that does private dinners at her house and displays a masterful combination of creative presentations and talented tastes. Another man in town cooks various meats hug in large open fire kimchi jars for under $2.00. A new restaurant in town has a 30-40 queue every day to get a table for a $4.00 lunch. I like to always joke with my friends to take a pocket full of wedding rings as it seems to attract all the beautiful people in town.

Over my 8 years running around to literally every premium restaurant, I’ve managed to uncover the top 70 restaurants in my opinion based on talent, ambiance, and value. One quality though that always catches my attention is that infectious smile or that happy server who is just love’n their job. I seem to quickly become a regular at those spots as just puts a smile on my face for the day too.

So as a solution to trying to uncover number one, every year I put together a favorites list; and instead of a gold star or a 1-3 star award, instead the restaurant is awarded on specifically their perceived talent. Example most comfy chair, best smile, best uniform, most creative ____ and so on. I think it helps narrow it down as to “ ok I want to go here for this reason”. Overall the town is filled with talent, friendliness, and an incredible use of specialty grown regional ingredients. Welcome to take a look.

Making cloths in Thailand

… one of the joys of visiting or living in Thailand is getting to design and make your own cloths.

Typically the process consists of going out and hunting for fabric and then finding a seamstress that’s willing to do the work considering everyone’s busy schedules.

Shirt fabric ~ $8.80

Tailor ~ $9.00

The alternative is to visit one of the many all in one tailor shops of course who has the fabric on site and also who can take down one’s measurements. Average $26- $35 for a shirt. I always thought what a convenience to have my measurements on file for future orders, but that quickly became a fizzle as my waist seemed to always change for some odd reason. Dang coconut cake!

The best spot for hunting down fabric is in China town (above pic) with rows of shops with unusual to traditional type fabrics including cashmere.

I found the easiest way to do it though, is to just take in your favorite shirt and just have them match it. It eliminates the “to-tight” syndrome and also makes for a speedy process.

Chiang Mai very own Equestrian School

Chiang Mai surprisingly has its own Equestrian school which holds competitions every year in January attracting competitors from across all of Asia. Equestrian Education Center. Equestrian Education Center Chiang Mai

Featured Hospital of the Month

Lamphun Klaimor Hospital

No waiting and some of the lowest pricing I’ve ever seen. The hospital is about a 30 minute drive South from Chiang Mai and feels like you have the entire facility to your self, I didn’t see any patients. For a complete health check-up it is between $87- $644 depending on age and extent of the number of tests. Rooms start at $59/nt.

Sepak Takraw Competition

Sepak Takraw (foot volleyball) competition was held this Month in town. The game is said to date back over 500 years with the Chinese but it was the Malaysians who refined the game as it’s known today. It was only in the 1980s where they recently gave the sport a governing body with international rules and regulations.

Eulogy from Jonky

I immediately grew very fond of Rob when meeting him for the very first time at a Skal dinner. (Skal is a global Tourism Organization) He had an uncanny drive like that of a 16 year old but in a older man’s body. He was hip I loved that.

Unassuming and yet immensely intriguing Rob presented himself with a wealth of knowledge and a long proven list of life’s experiences.

He owned a premier piece of land on the Ping river to which he invited me out to his home one day. A 35 villa property that he had built on his own we trekked the entire property together sharing in his vast and impressive accomplishment in the summers thai sweltering volcanic heat.

I could barely keep up with him, I was completely winded trying to keep up with his brisk pace. When I finally managed to catch my breath I panted out and asked “what is going on with you Rob, your pace is like that of an Olympic athlete?” And without any hesitation he quickly blurted out “Ginseng!”

He went on to explain it gives me energy and also fights against one’s ailments. The first hint that something might be wrong but I didn’t feel it was my place to probe any further as I think he preferred to keep this sort of thing quite private.

So the very next day I anxiously ventured out to purchase my new discovery thanks to my dear friend and find possibly life’s very own hidden longevity secret.

And after a months time I met up with Rob again and to report back my progress on using ginseng at our monthly Skal dinner. I said to him while seated at a large group table with other Skal members,

“you know Rob, Ginseng gives one more than just energy?” At which time the entire table of male guests all leaned in at the same time, where I went on to further explain

“it also enhances one’s sex life.” We all roared with laughter and it was especially fun to make Rob laugh he really enjoyed life to the fullest.

He cared for his family very much and would often have annual party’s thanking his dear family and closest friends.

I will really miss my dear friend Rob deeply, he taught me so much about life in such a short period of time and living in the now. I will always remember his drive, determination and his deep heart of caring for others.

Good bye my friend
