Monthly news for Chiang Mai and surrounding areas of Thailand

May 2024
Chiang Mai  Thailand
A word from the editor.

Wow wow wow and what a Month is was! During the Songkran festival, Chiang Mai and various other parts of Thailand experienced artificial rain showers as part of the festivities: five days of endless splashing, soaking, squirting, showering.  Likely one of the more surreal pictures was Maya shopping plaza and the sheer number of people overflowing into the streets, taking over the entire intersection; moreover, the moat road was at a complete stand still from the mass about of traffic too/ ground zero.  If you thought you could stay dry over the holiday break it definitely proved otherwise with lurking water projectiles at almost every turn.

For some who maybe might not know or not familiar with Thailand's Songkran Holiday, in short it's a National water fight.  In historical terms it's typically celebrated in April, the splashing of water represents purification and the washing away of sins and bad luck. People splash water on each other, use water guns, and oftentimes ride in trucks equipped with large barrels of water for a massive water fight. It's a time for joy, renewal, and community celebration. Traditional rituals also include visiting temples, making merit, and pouring water on Buddha statues. The festival is not only celebrated in Thailand but also in other Southeast Asian countries with Thai communities.

Millions came out to celebrate the Songkran holiday leading to an estimated number of tourists for the year at 35 million 2024 up from 28 million last year 2023; translating to $240 million from international tourism and $428 milion from domestic tourism respectively of new discretionary spending.

I hope you enjoy the pictures and can get a sense of the holiday's overwhelming fun and excitement.  It will truly be a Month to remember.

Smiles,    Jonky

How to survive the college years in Chiang Mai?   At the night market anywhere between $1.00- $6.00 will get you pretty much anything your needing (shirts, pants, glasses, jewelry, and accessories). It's where many of the students will go for dinner costing about $1.00- $3.00.

Chiang Mai makes the top 5

The Best Cities with Healthcare / 4. Chiang Mai (Thailand) Score-84.1

Thailand is renowned worldwide for its affordable and adequate healthcare system. Chiang Mai is home to some of these institutions that provide services of an international standard.

The Bangkok Hospital is a renowned network of private hospitals in Chiang Mai that provides superior medical services. There, not just in Thailand, is one of Southeast Asia’s most significant privately owned hospitals. The hospital’s helipad conveys critical patients to other facilities in an emergency.

Public hospitals provide primary medical care, whereas private hospitals provide more specialized services. In addition, many private medical facilities provide various healthcare services, such as general practice, dentistry, and optometry.

Numerous medical facilities offer traditional Thai medicine, including massage therapy and herbal treatments. In addition, numerous Chiang Mai pharmacies sell prescription and over-the-counter medications.

One of the pioneers in Thailand’s medical tourism industry. Because the cost of health care is a minuscule fraction of what it is in the West. Its urban private hospitals are almost always crowded with foreign patients. In addition to cosmetic procedures, the country is renowned for its orthopedic care, dental work, and cardiac surgery.
